Abstract

Hepatic and renal disorders are major public health concerns. Curcuma longa contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may improve hepatic and renal biochemical markers. This study evaluated these effects in paracetamol-induced rats. The extract was prepared by maceration using 96% ethanol. Twenty-four Rattus norvegicus were assigned to four groups (n = 6): a paracetamol-only control (PC) and three groups receiving extract at 300, 500, or 900 mg/kg body weight. Following three days of acclimatization, all rats received oral paracetamol (750 mg/kg) on day 4. Extract treatment was administered on days 5–11, and blood was collected on day 12. Biochemical markers were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test. Compared with PC, the 900 mg/kg group showed lower AST (193.67 versus 96.67 U/L) and ALT (145.33 versus 61.83 U/L; p < 0.05). Total/direct bilirubin decreased from 1.295/0.548 to 0.545/0.208 mg/dL (p < 0.001), while urea and creatinine decreased from 60.83 to 35.66 mg/dL and 1.23 to 0.71 mg/dL, respectively. The greatest reductions occurred at 900 mg/kg. These findings suggest beneficial effects hepatic and renal biochemical markers. However, the absence of a normal healthy control group limits interpretation  injury severity and whether treatment restored markers to normal levels
