Abstract

Hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] is a porous calcium phosphate compound with potential as a heavy metal adsorbent. In this study, HAp was synthesized from calcined catfish bones using the sol–gel method and evaluated as an adsorbent for Cu(II) ions in aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of a crystalline phase consistent with HAp, while BET analysis provided information on its surface area and porous structure. The effects of solution pH, initial Cu(II) concentration, and contact time on adsorption performance were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity was 262.13 mg/g at pH 5, an initial Cu(II) concentration of 600 mg/L, and a contact time of 30 min. The adsorption kinetics were described by the pseudo-second-order model, while the equilibrium data fitted the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting predominantly monolayer adsorption. These findings demonstrate the potential of catfish-bone-derived HAp as a biogenic adsorbent for Cu(II) removal from aqueous solutions.
